Why Are So Many Security Professionals Keeping Breaches Quiet?

According to Bitdefender, almost half of 1,200 IT and security professionals surveyed reported a breach or security incident in the last 12 months, and 55.2% of them said they had been asked to keep a breach confidential even when it should have been disclosed.

Read that again, because it’s an actual finding from the 2026 Bitdefender Cybersecurity Assessment.

And if we consider the question by country, it’s even worse in the U.S., where 69% of respondents reported being told to keep a breach confidential in the last 12 months.
