Russian hackers ‘steal HUNDREDS of U.K. Ministry of Defence files and leak them to dark web’ in ‘catastrophic’ attack

The Sun reports:

RUSSIAN cybercriminals have stolen hundreds of military documents and posted them on the dark web in a ‘catastrophic’ hack.

The security breach compromised eight RAF and Royal Navy bases as well as emails and names of Ministry of Defence staff, as reported in The Mail on Sunday.

The breach has been labelled ‘catastrophic’ and the MoD are investigating the attack which was believed to have been orchestrated by Russian group Lynx.

The criminals gained access to the sensitive information by hacking a maintenance and construction contractor employed by the MoD in a “gateway” attack.

Using the third party Dodd Group as a target allowed the hackers to get through the MoD’s strong cyber defences.

A check of the Lynx ransomware leak site today by The Data Breach Times confirms that there is a listing claiming responsibility for the attack on Dodd Group. Proof of claim images (redacted by The Data Breach Times) are included in the listing, but the attackers have not dumped any databases or additional data as of this publication time.
