Risky Biz News reports that the battle between the US and Portugal over which country gets to prosecute the owner of the RaidForums hacking forum and marketplace continues. Diogo Santos Coelho, known online as Omnipotent, is a Portuguese national who was arrested in the UK in January 2022 when he flew there to visit his mother. The U.S. then filed a request for extradition, but Portugal also issued a warrant for his arrest. Errors made and inaccurate information provided to the U.K.’s Secretary of State for the Home Department led to an appeal by Coelho, who argues that he can be and should be tried in Portugal. In addition to having victims in Portugal, Portugal argues that Coelho has even more charges in Portugal than in the U.S. as he never paid Portuguese taxes he owed on monies earned. DataBreaches.net reports that a judge agreed with Coelho on a number of issues raised and has sent the matter back for accurate fact-finding and consideration.
