Brazil’s government is investigating a suspected cyberattack after a bizarre, unauthorized emergency alert woke citizens across multiple states early Saturday morning.

The country’s National Protection and Civil Defense Secretariat confirmed that the national notification system was completely shut down around 1:30 a.m. local time, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.

The emergency shutdown was triggered immediately after a cryptic message containing only the word “misanthropy”—defined as a hatred of humanity—was broadcasted remotely to mobile devices.
