The Abilene City Council has unanimously approved nearly $1 million in funding to bolster cybersecurity efforts and restore systems after a recent cyberattack knocked out several city servers.
Director of Information Technology Troy Swanson addressed the council Thursday, outlining the costs and detailing the recovery process. He said the investment is aimed at both restoring critical infrastructure and preventing future incidents.

The city had been the target of a ransomware attack, but the city decided not to pay the demand. Although the Qilin ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for the attack and had threatened to dump 477 GB of files on May 27, a check of their dark web leak site today indicates that they did not follow through on their threat — at least, not yet.
