First Financial Security, Inc. notifies 105,764 people of October ransomware attack

On October 17, 2023, First Financial Security, Inc. (“FFS”_ was the victim of a ransomware attack. The Georgia insurance agency recently notified those affected by the incident that the attack appeared to be an attempt to access and lock all data, including both sensitive and non-sensitive data.

“Thankfully, the ransomware attack was not successful in freezing our systems and disrupting our operations,” Trent Asher, the firm’s Chief Information Officer, wrote in a January 19 letter that went out to all those affected.

The information that may have been accessed or viewed included individuals’ full name, personal information, and social security number. The notification letter did not indicate exactly what types of personal information may have been accessed or viewed, but the inclusion of name and social security number makes the data more useful to criminals for fraudulent purposes such as identity theft.

In a notification to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, FFS’s external counsel reported that a total of 105,764 people were affected by the incident, of which 18 were Maine residents.

Information on registering for the complimentary mitigation services with IDX FFS arranged for can be found in the notification letter.
