DarkReading reports that Spanish banking giant Santander has disclosed a recent data breach at a third-party provider. Bank customers in Chile, Spain, and Uruguay have reportedly been affected.
“No transactional data, nor any credentials that would allow transactions to take place on accounts are contained in the database, including online banking details and passwords,” according to a Santander statement. It also noted that the bank’s operations and systems were not affected, which means customers can still carry out their transactions, should they choose.
Although the threat actors were not identified, there has been a notable uptick in attacks on the financial sector and insurance industry by threat actors often referred to as “Scattered Spider,” as reported previously in The Data Breach Times.
