There’s another update to the situation in Rhode Island, where threat actors called Brain Cipher managed to acquire data from the RIBridges portal that handles certain public services such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid benefits, and health insurance through the state’s marketplace for coverage. The state continues to update its cyber-alert page about the incident, but it appears that hundreds of thousands of people may have had their data leaked already on the dark web or it’s about to be leaked. MedicalBuyer reports:
[Governor Dan] McKee’s office said Monday that, according to its consultant Deloitte, the hackers who broke into the IT system for the state’s health and benefits programs earlier this month have released a set of files on the dark web, WPRI reported.
“Today the cyber criminals did in fact publish at least some of the Rhode Island Bridge’s information and data files onto the dark web,” McKee said during a press conference.
Although the state did not release specifics on what was leaked, the state said they have identified about 650,000 people whose personal information was stolen from the system. An independent news site provided more details about what was stolen:
Databreaches.net reported Monday that it had made contact with Brain Cipher, and the ransomware group confirmed that they were responsible for the RIBridges attack.
The threat actors also allowed DataBreaches.net to preview the leak. DataBreaches.net reported that the data they inspected contained personally identifiable information that was all in plain text.
The dark web leak site has reportedly been under DoS attack to prevent people from connecting to it or accessing the data leak.
